OkI am passionate about the world we live in and the people who inhabit it – something that dates to when I was a young boy who spent hours gazing at a globe, studying atlases, or watching any TV programme on anything to do with our planet.
Today I speak, write, blog, comment, campaign on or represent a number of contemporary world issues; am an ambassador on sustainability; an ambassador or patron to several other charities; and a member of other organisations, causes and campaigns worldwide. The commonality on most of the issues is clear objectives, authenticity, risks, trade-offs, choices & consequences and, in cases, exposing denial. Together with possibility…
If you would like to enquire more about my keynote speaking, interviews for media, request for articles, or to discuss a trusteeship, patronage or ambassadorship of a charity that you believe I could help, please contact Jane or Seamus, who will promptly respond to your requests.
The below are some of the causes I am involved in.
Sustainability – and Climate Change
Sustainability is the most overused yet misunderstood word in the English language today. As an ambassador for economic, social and environmental sustainability, I aim to enlighten what it actually is; how everything we do in one pillar affects all three, and how we can’t address any problem in one without addressing all together. And, whilst I have witnessed the effects of climate change first-hand in three major polar expeditions in recent years, caution how a single risk, single focus and single remedy campaign for climate change alone is both misguided and possibly even a detriment to the bigger environmental picture…
Population Matters
I am a Patron of Population Matters, the world’s leading charity campaigning to achieve a sustainable human population to protect the natural world and improve people’s lives. PM promotes positive, practical and ethical solutions – encouraging smaller families, inspiring people to reduce excessive consumption and helping us all to live within our planet’s limits. The charity believes everyone should have the freedom and ability to choose a smaller family and supports human rights, women’s empowerment and global justice. www.populationmatters.org
CHASE Africa
I am a Patron of CHASE Africa – Community Health and Sustainable Environment Africa. CHASE’s mission is to enable women and men in fragile rural environments in Eastern Africa to access basic healthcare, empower them to choose the timing, number and spacing of their children and also support environmental sustainability. www.chaseafrica.org.uk
Mental Health – and Mental Fitness
Whilst there are many organizations campaigning on mental health issues, most are failing and in denial of the main reasons – the very consequences of Western society’s progress. In my work with the subject, I campaign how we need to be incorporating, from secondary school years, the concepts, tools and teachings of ‘Mental Fitness’ – building up our mental muscles, in the same way as we do our physical muscles, to become mentally stronger, fitter and healthier in order to deal with life’s challenges in a positive, rather than negative, mindset.
The Education Gap
Whilst society has changed beyond recognition in the past 15 years, education is struggling to keep pace with the change. In my ‘What You’re Not Taught at School’ lectures, I aim to enlighten universities, colleges and schools on the skills that employers are finding lacking in young people today; how these underdeveloped skills are being caused by the very technology propelling society’s change; and solutions that schools and young people of all ages can incorporate to solve the problem.
Cancer – The Real Solutions
1 in 2 of us born after 1960 will now contract cancer in our lifetime - a disease that barely existed 60years ago - and many oncologists admit that the 'Big C' is out of control. Having been involved in a number of cancer organizations over the years, my work is focused on the big picture of enlightening how the majority of cancers are caused by what is going into our bodies – through our mouth or nose, on our skin, or through our skin. And how we can greatly lessen our risks in succumbing to the diseases in our own lives.
Physical Health, Nutrition and Fitness
Physical health, or the lack of it, has had a rude awakening since the Coronavirus hit the world. As someone who has always been fascinated with the human body; who has had to get the utmost out of it; and who has seen the abuse of it when in medical training, I am passionate about imparting the big picture lessons of health, nutrition, physical activity and sleep on the one body we will ever have.
Just One Ocean
I am an ambassador for Just One Ocean, a rapidly growing marine conservation registered UK charity, whose mission is to protect the ocean for future generations through science, education and communication. www.justoneocean.org
MIRA Himalaya (Medicine in Remote Areas, Himalaya)
As a former qualified Paramedic and pending Community First Responder, I have been involved in an ongoing project, supported by local sponsors and an NGO, providing medical camps in the remote regions of the Nepal Himalayas. With regulations and restrictions increased as a result of the Covid crisis, we are seeking new partners for the venture. Please contact Jane or Seamus below if interested.
