Adrian Hayes on life

About

Adrian Hayes was introduced to a life of adventure since his early childhood in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK. He started climbing in his teens and, leaving school at 16 with 5 GCSE’s, spent 6 years travelling the world mountaineering and adventuring whilst working intermittently in the UK, Norway and New Zealand as a builder’s labourer, bricklayer, farmer, singer and guitarist in a rock band and refuse collector amongst others.

He served for two years as a trooper with 21 Special Air Service Regiment, qualifying as a Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic), before attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and becoming a British Officer in the Brigade of Gurkhas, serving in Hong Kong and Brunei. He followed this with a two year secondment to the Royal Army of Oman in Salalah, Southern Oman.

On leaving the Army he studied for an MBA at the University of Nottingham, UK, before going into business, culminating in his position as Regional Sales Director Middle East and West Asia for Airbus, based in Toulouse, France, followed by the UAE.

Having studied Human Resources on his MBA he continued his studies, programmes and teaching in personal development and coaching and set up his own company in 2007 as a professional adventurer, speaker and business coach, delivering keynote speeches, team development workshops, leadership seminars, executive coaching and other programmes worldwide.

He set a Guinness World record in 2007 for reaching the Earth's "3 Poles" - walking all the way to the North Pole, South Pole and summiting Mt Everest - in the then shortest period of time in history, becoming one of only 18 people ever to achieve the feat. Along with Canadians Devon McDiarmid and Derek Crowe, he crossed the length of the Greenland ice cap in 2009, achieving a second Guinness World record for the Arctic’s longest unsupported kite-skiing journey to date, the documentary for which was broadcast on National Geographic Channel in 2011.

In 2011 he led a 44 day 1600 km crossing of the Arabian Desert by foot and camel in the trail of 1940s British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger, the documentary for which was broadcast on Discovery Channel in 2013 and his book ‘Footsteps of Thesiger’ published the same year.

In 2013 he attempted to summit K2, the world’s second highest mountain, from Pakistan which was aborted when an avalanche wiped out Camp 3 at 7300 metres, killing two fellow climbers. He returned for a second attempt in 2014 and successfully summited the “Savage Mountain’ on 26 July 2014. In doing so he became only the 8th Briton to summit K2 and reached a further milestone by becoming the first Briton and third person in the world ever to summit the world’s two highest mountains and trek to both poles.

A lifetime follower of international affairs and an ambassador on economic, social & environmental sustainability, he is a member of several organisations and charities, regularly speaking, writing and campaigning on many worldwide issues.

In his free time, Adrian competes in ironman triathlons, is a two-time UAE fitness challenge champion and a keen rock climber, runner, cyclist and swimmer. His interests span the range of personal and human development, all sports, nutrition, science, medicine, film and music, and he occasionally still sings and plays guitar in a rock band.

A father of two children, Arabic and Nepalese speaking Adrian has lived and worked in 9 countries and visited over 100.
