The Wildest Dream

10 Aug 2010

The above feature film on Conrad Anker's 1999 Everest expedition to find the body of George Mallory has just been released here in the US, rest of the World shortly. Stand by for a glut of more "did he summit before Hilary" stories shortly.

So did Mallory and Sandy Irvine summit? The simple answer, despite erronous and speculative reports for and against, is that no one knows. The remarkable discover of Mallory 11 years ago didn't prove it. And no-one will unless the body of Irvine is ever found high up on Everest, even that possibly not providing the answer. The sole piece of evidence that may prove if they did is the camera that Irvine was known to be carrying - any film of them on the summit likely being preserved in the deep freeze conditions on the mountain.

A Chinese climber reported seeing a "dead Englishman" in old climbing clothes high up on Everest's North ridge in 1975 but he subsequently died. The body is no longer there, likely falling down the Kangshung face, an extremely difficult and dangerous expedition for any researchers. Other possibly sightings have been made but it will likely forever remain a great mystery. Meanwhile, enjoy the great film!
