One Month Passed

30 Aug 2013

One month ago today we bid our farewell to K2 and commenced the long trek and journey home. The mountain soared into the skies in perfect weather with hardly any wind. I, and I imagine, most others continually stared up at the vertical ice slopes, the jagged ridgelines and the rock faces, contemplating the events of the past week. Up there at camp 3 lay buried under a metre of snow two of our fellow climbers, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, whilst the rest of us reflected on our luck in choosing to come down.

A week later I flew to Dubai and then straight onto the UK. The first week back to the UK had its normal re-adjustment issues coupled with a host of medical problems, most notably some kind of dysentery which knocked me out for a week Since then, however, surrounded by some very special people and my darling daughter for an all too brief 7 days, its been a lovely summer in the UK, with great weather, lots of activities and a lot of fun. The perfect place to recuperate in the absence of any success. I'm back to training regularly with the local running club, the gym and my bike and completely living in the present.

Thoughts often turn to K2 and next year's planned return but that can wait another day. For now, there's something very special about living in the present.........
