At this early stage I should have been writing about a stunning if long drive into the Karakorum and the only discussions on risk would have been about K2 in the weeks to come. Instead the Nanga Parbat murders have disrupted things somewhat - we are still in Islamabad and most people outside of Pakistan are understandably concerned at the assumed risks before even reaching the mountain!
Nanga Parbat, the 9th highest mountain in the World is some way west from K2 and the three other 8000 metre peaks in Pakistan (Gasherbrum 1 and 2 and Broad Peak), but we pass through the area on the way to the high mountains. The first climbers from now sealed off Nanga Parbat are back in Islamabad, including Mingma Sherpa (picture to follow shortly), and his story of what actually happened is pretty horrific.
We are completely safe and well in the city along with a few other teams who were turned back Sunday morning en route to G1 & G2, and merely waiting for the Government and security services' plans. There are 20 odd teams on the big mountains in Pakistan at present, some already on the mountains, others trekking in, and a fair number of trekkers so it's not that we're alone. And.........we have been inundated with goodwill messages from Pakistanis equally appalled at what happened. Audio dispatch to follow shortly for more.
